To encourage healthier and more culturally appropriate food options in local school meals and support the economic viability of kalo farming, Malama Kauai has launched the Kalo to Kula Program and its Kalo to Kula Recipe Contest. This exciting initiative “aims to ensure that kalo continues to reclaim its rightful place in our daily island food culture by developing appreciation by young kalo consumers and bringing kalo into schools.” Submitted recipes will be tested by local keiki before being cataloged in a USDA-compliant recipe guidebook for cafeteria-style meals that comply with the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. The Kalo to Kula Program is a recipient of the Office of Economic Development’s 2023-2024 Innovation Grant.
Deadline to submit recipes is December 31, 2023.
